Dark horse Kris Allen wins "American Idol" Arkansas student Kris Allen won the eighth season of "American Idol" on Wednesday, dealing an unexpected defeat to singing rival Adam Lambert on the most popular U.S. television show. Allen, 23, who won over audiences with his all-American good looks and by putting his personal spin on popular tunes, appeared shocked as Lambert, a 27-year-old musical theater actor, embraced him after host Ryan Seacrest's announcement. Allen's smooth vocals and boy-next-door image gave him the edge after nearly 100 million viewer votes were cast, turning the theatrical Lambert into the most unlikely of also-rans. When the season started, Allen seemed unsure he had a right to take center stage, let alone stand there and snatch victory from such a formidable rival. During his "Idol" audition last summer, Allen, hands in his pockets and a newsboy cap pulled down around his eyes, was asked by the judges if he was the best singe

Crooner Kris Allen won "American Idol" on Wednesday, besting eyeliner-wearing belter Adam Lambert. Kris Allen may have looked bone tired at the end of his nearly year-long marathon to take the American Idol crown, but he was nothing but chatty when EW spoke with the champeen one-on-one in the post-finale "Winner's Walk." With his mother and wife patiently waiting on a nearby bench, Allen gamely talked about why he's still surprised he's done as well as he has on the show, when he and Adam Lambert learned they would be rocking out with Queen, how he formed his lasting bond with the glam rocker, and which Oscar winners nearly brought him to tears. Another possible factor in Allen's win: Those who had been voting for Danny Gokey switched their votes to Allen. "After the third one leaves, you wonder where do the votes go from that third contestant," judge Paula Abdul said after the finale, according to the Associated Press. Kris Allen Post Show

Now Call them the "dark horse," the "Come-from-Behind Kid," the humble crooner. Call them whatever you like. But from now on you also need to call your "American Idol." After months of competition and a jam-packed finale 'Kris Allen and Adam Lambert' performed on the Idol stage at the Nokia Theatre Wednesday night in a musical spectacular before learning the results of a little less than 100 million votes. Actually, America’s decision will be a point of considerable debate in the next day and maybe even days beyond that — with just under 100 million votes cast, dark horse Kris Allen beat out Adam Lambert, who for weeks has been considered the all-but-inevitable champ. This is the biggest upset in eight seasons. The result was an even bigger surprise considering that — as even Kris’s supporters would concede — Adam gave the stronger performance on the Tuesday performance show. Simon anointed him a “worldwide star.” Just before the vote was announ
