US actor Brad Pitt and US actress Angelina Jolie arrives for the gala screening of the film 'Inglourious Basterds' by US director Quentin Tarantino, running in competition in the 62nd edition of the Cannes film festival in Cannes, France. Pitt and Jolie posed for photographs and signed autographs for some of the 1,000 fans who had gathered at the Palais des Festivals. It was Pitt and Jolie's first public appearance together in several months, and naturally they became a focus of media attention. The celebrity couple were appearing in Cannes a year after Jolie's pregnancy had been revealed in error at the last festival by the actress's Kung Fu Panda co-star Jack Black. On this visit to the French Riviera and Cannes Film Festival, Jolie was wearing a revealing salmon pink gown that displayed one of her shoulders. “The White Ribbon,” by the Austrian director Michael Haneke, won the Cannes Film Festival’s top award, the Palme d’Or, during a televised red-carpet ceremony. Austrian director Michael Haneke's drama The White Ribbon has won the coveted Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The black-and-white movie is set in a northern German school before World War I, where brutal and mysterious events take place: Children are tortured and a barn is set on fire. The prize was given by a nine-member jury led by actress Isabelle Huppert, who had starred in Haneke’s 2001 movie “The Piano Teacher.” “This is a moment in my life in which I am really very happy,” Haneke said in French, collecting his award on stage. The world’s leading film festival began May 13 in the French Mediterranean resort, with 20 films in competition. The festival runs on an annual budget of 20 million euros ($28 million), and accredits some 25,000 film professionals each year, as well as more than 4,000 media professiona
