Two Picassos painted late in the artist’s career and a Giacometti bronze brought solid prices at Christie’s on Wednesday night in what was a surprising reversal of tastes and trends. Where Sotheby’s had failed to sell its top Picasso and Giacometti at its Impressionist and modern art auction on Tuesday night, just 24 hours later Christie’s received bids from around the world. His portrait of a musketeer smoking a pipe was sold for $14.6m (£9.7m), while another painting, A Woman with a Hat, fetched $7.7m (£5.1m). Lots at the Christie's auction sold for a combined total of $103m (£68.65m). At a rival Sotheby's sale earlier this week, Picasso's portrait of his daughter Maya went unsold. The Daughter Of The Artist At Two-and-a-half Years With A Boat had been expected to fetch up to $24m (£16m). Pab

'Star Trek' attracts fresh blood, in high hopes.

The new film star trek, directed by J.J. Abrams, takes "Trek" back to the early days of the USS Enterprise with a young Capt. James T. Kirk and his crew. The marketing for Star Trek has said, “This is not your father’s Star Trek,” and by the end of the film the mythology of Trek may indeed not belong to your old man, but the catchphrases and character quirks make it hard to separate 2009’s Trek from the 1960s original that started it all. It’s a mixed bag to be certain, but in the end it is a lot of fun. From the outset, Star Trek alters the 40+ year mythology of the classic series, asking die-hard fans to give in to the film and not concern themselves with what they know. This is a film more determined to build a quality cast of characters rather than concern itself with timeline’s and the history of the franchise as it has b

Polly Hudson says Victoria Beckham has lost her fashion sense

Image
Victoria Beckham is one star who is always dressed to the nines. Did you know she doesn’t have a stylist? She does have an entourage of make-up and hair people, but no one to put it all together for her as if she was a Barbie Doll. And that’s a good thing! We confess we were miffed when Victoria Beckham went nuts for Christian Siriano's collection in the Project Runway season finale and proclaimed she would love, even feel honored, to wear his clothes. Beckham may not be known for her minimalist fashion sense (when Roberto Cavalli designs your tour clothes, subtlety just isn't for you), but even we were surprised she went so gaga for Siriano's ruffle-and-feather parade.
